Artificial Intelligence applications have come to be the talk of the town. Very few of us can refuse the opportunity to chat with robot that acts seemingly to the way humans do. Are all the applications that blame themselves AI-driven, indeed, that smart? Unfortunately, not.

Creating artificial intelligence application that sounds as natural as a human takes a lot of computer power, datasets for the training and testing, and smart algorithms. Regarding that, most of the artificial intelligence application can handle only quite a narrow range of conversation scenarios, and it already satisfies the needs of service.

At the same time, there’s a handful of applications that do surprise with their human-like behavior. In this article, I invite you to explore some of them.

Mitsuku chatbot

Platform: Facebook Messenger

Few times Mitsuku has been a winner of Loebner Prize. What great is about this chatbot is that you can chat with it about everything. And it will give you a clear view of what Artificial Intelligence applications are capable of nowadays.

Mitsuku is self-learning chatbot, which means that every new conversation makes it a bit smarter and, therefore, closer to humans. As it based on Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing, the more inputs it receives, the more information algorithm behind the application acquires to train.

Unlike most of the chatbots that are programmed and trained to operate in a specific field (different services of recommendation origin), Mitsuku’s range of topics vastly varies. It’s rather a virtual friend than a consultant or an assistant. When somebody asks how Mitsuku works, it explains it in the following way (on the image below).

Platform: App “Baidu Doctor”

In 2016, Baidu, the leading search solutions company in China, launched AI-powered healthcare chatbot Melody. It’s based on the most advanced Machine Learning approaches, including complex Artificial Neural Networks and Natural Language Processing.

The attitude to such applications is quite ambiguous, especially among medical experts. It’s understandable if to think about it in terms of a substitution for full-fledged medical help. In reality, such healthcare chatbots don’t pretend to be real doctors. Their primary aim is to make communication between medical field and patients more comfortable.

The widespread problem among people of all ages and backgrounds is they postpone visiting medical institutions. They feel uncomfortable getting in touch with the strangers on the personal issues or they just don’t know what kind of doctor they need to visit.

Melody helps to check symptoms and figure out what kind of help and expert the patient may need. Moreover, it’s completely private, which means that the first stage of communicating the problem shouldn’t trigger any discomfort on the patient’s side.

Melody was created with the help of thousands of patients and doctors, and it’s dynamically learning from the new conversations improving itself with the time.

Andrew Ng, who used to be the chief artificial scientist in Baidu and resigned recently, explained Melody’s advantages:

“What we found when operating Baidu Doctor is that when a patient asks a question, often the initial query doesn’t have enough information for a doctor to make the most confident decision. Melody asks those additional questions and as they’re generated by AI, they’re reactive, responding to what you’ve already said”

Platform: Slack

Chatbots’ capabilities aren’t measured by just writing to the computer memory and retrieving from it certain information when needed. If programmed properly, they can perform complex data mining tasks. Some of them can help you manage your workflow.

Kyber is one of the most useful Artificial Intelligence applications available on Slack (perhaps, the most popular virtual workspace nowadays). It can help you to perform scheduling and management of the whole workflow inside your team. You can use it as a powerful project-management tool if your team uses Slack.

Platform: App “Luka”.

As Internet space accumulates more and more information, not even every day but every second (nearly 7.6K tweets and 60.5K searches per second on Google), finding what you need becomes more challenging.

This is where recommendation systems come in. Regarding your preferences, they help to find what you need within an extremely short period of time. Many Artificial Intelligence applications contain recommendation components, and Luka is the great example.

Instead of recommending services, Luka connects you with the smart chatbots that can satisfy your needs. Luka’s users often ask for the places where to go or what kind of dishes to order. However, those are far not the only options. You can even say that you need entertainment, and you will find yourself chatting with the gaming bot.

Eugenia Kuyda, co-founder, and CEO of Luka commented on the purposes of Luka:

“The challenge is that people don’t really use bots yet.“We’re trying to make that experience as natural and helpful as possible so that people start using bots more.”

Platform: App “Mona”

Retail bots represent the commercial portion of Artificial Intelligence applications. Earning money on chatbots usually imply that you have retail and recommendation under the hood of the conversational interface. However, retail bots also vary. Mona pretends to be more than just a chatbot for promoting products but a full-fledged AI-based personal assistant.

Do you also want to earn money with chatbot? You can order it right now!

Mona was created by an ex-Amazon team with the intention to make “shopping organized around people and their existing missions”, accordingly to Orkun Atik, one of the founders of Mona.

You can ask Mona to notify you when desired sports shoes appear on sale. Also, Mona will periodically come up with the recommendations based on your interests. To make recommendations more precise you can give Mona access to your emails so it will be able to figure out more about your preferences.

Artificial Intelligence applications can not only make your life easier but they can also solve questions that are too energy- and time-consuming for humans. At the same time, one should not overrate capabilities of AI-based applications. Whatever useful AI tools are, they can serve as the extension of human abilities but not as the substitution.
